The rot began to set in during the late eighties when companies began "leasing" famous brand names to no-mark manufacturers.
The "Bush" brand, which had disappeared after being bought by The Rank Industries, suddenly showed up again, except they were made in Turkey. Soon after followed a whole raft of Turkish delights all virtually identical. I had fun in one shop challenging the salesman to justify a £100 price difference between two sets which were essentially the same inside. ....... I won.
After this came the Indian TVs, and then the stuff from China.
Compared to the sets put out by Panasonic, Sony, Mitsubishi and the like, the build quality was/is rubbish. But because they are so cheap (you wouldn`t believe it), there is no longer any need for an army of service engineers.. they can afford to swap your telly for a new one in most cases.
Back to your comments MJB..
I have no doubt at all that there are several brands of monitor which are identical inside.
Also, this kind of fault is not unusual in most kinds of electronic equipment. Components are (1) under-rated and therefore running close to their limit all the time; and (2) packed so closely together that they run hotter than they were designed to do.
Yes, the old eyes aren`t as keen as they used to be so I did resort to a bench magnifier, and that was just to put the sugar in my tea!
