Hello brainboxes, I need some help / info re: CD players with "Digital Output" - (otherwise kown as SP-Dif)
I want to get a CDG-decoder to work with my Philips 723 CD player but I need to be certain about compatibility.
The specs of my player quote IEC958, which I thought was the standard.
The decoder uses AES/EBU EIJA CP340 and I can`t find out what this actually means and the salesman doesn`t have a clue.
So can any of you info-maniacs help me with this?
Please ??

The digital audio standard frequently called AES/EBU, officially known as AES3, is used for carrying digital audio signals between various devices. It was developed by the Audio Engineering Society (AES) and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and first published in 1985, later revised in 1992 and 2003. Both AES and EBU versions of the standard exist. Several different physical connectors are also defined as part of the overall group of standards. A related system, S/PDIF, was developed essentially as a consumer version of AES/EBU, using connectors more commonly found in the consumer market.

Note that the electrical levels differ between AES/EBU and S/PDIF.
The Main differences between AES / EBU and S/PDIF can be found listed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S/PDIF

Phew, some heavy reading there.
The first thing I noticed was the signal levels - up to 20 times greater in AES/EBU than S/PDIF.
Thanks, I`ll try and wade through it and see if I can make some more sense of it.

The connections are different to. It looks like AES/EBU uses XLR and BNC connections rather than Phono and Toslink.

The decoder I`m looking at (Essential Twinology) uses standard phono outputs.
The blurb says; "This decoder converts the digital output from any twin or single CD / DVD player to decode and display graphics from your CD-G discs." But the specs seem to tell a different tale :o
I can`t get a commitment off the dealer that it definitely will work with my player.
There again, I can always buy it then if necessary invoke the good old Sale Of Goods Act biggrin

Why don't you ask the dealer if you can leave a deposit and try it at home? Alternatively, can you take your CD player to the store and try it there? At least you'll know one way or the other if it will work or not.

It`s an Internet / Mail Order store :o (Electronic City).
I suppose I could use the 7 day distance selling rule.
Anyway I`m starting to go off the idea now. I discovered Power CDG Player which means I can play my cdg on the PC straight from the disc.
And if I decide to go do Karaoke gigs again (unlikely) I`ll get a laptop.
