Hi, i've just been given a lovely Sony LBT-XB20 Compact Hi-Fi. Everything plays beautifully except the C.D. compartment (it belonged to my elderly sister who never played it from when she got it) It keeps telling me there is no disc. We dusted it (it was full of dust, but no change. my husband thinks it could be something to do with the 'lazer'??? But is not much wiser than I on on this. Can anybody help please???

Hi Suzanne,
I've had no end of trouble with 1 of my Sonys [I wouldn't ever recommend Sony products].
If your sister never used the CD it's just possible that some of the transit packing is still in the cd compartment, or there maybe transit screws still in place. Read the instruction book carefully to check.
Make sure you're playing a new un-damaged CD NOT a CDR.
If you can't sort it pop it into your local Sony centre, but get a quote for any repairs 1st.

Oh thanks Johnny, will check this out. Will come back to you on this once it's done. Don't fancy paying for it to be sorted as what I wanted was for to be able to put tapes and L.P.'s on C.D.'s which I have achieved, have another C.D. Player - but it is bugging me so will trying sort it. Thanks again

You may have the answer there.

Some Sony multichangers are reknown as being dust collectors and after a small period of time CD's will no longer play.

You may find that using one of those CD cleaners with a series of small brushes that clean the laser head may help in the short term.

I recently had to bin a Sony Hi-Fi for exactly the same reason. Not sure of the model number but it had the 5 CD changer unit at the bottom and inside it was a 5 carousel spinning unit that was a dust magnet.

Thanks Kremmen. So far my husband has had to hi-fi apart dusting it etc. Was unable to do nothing much else and it still isn't working. But neither of us has heard of a CD cleaner - would you bekind enough to advise where I could get it and exactly how it works (if you don't mind) Am grateful to you all.

Hi

Mine came from Smith's amd is called a "CD Lens Cleaner".

It's basically a CD that you put in the unit and as it plays there are a small number of brushes that wipe the lens clean.

There is of course one snag - the CD needs to be able to identify that a CD has been inserted and try to play it. This is what finally killed mine off because the dudt had become so bad that it refused to identify that a CD has been inserted.

Suzanne I'd hold off buying a cleaner, unless there's a pound shop near you where u can buy 1 for £1. The cleaner is like a cd with has little cleaning bristles. Your cdp has to be working for the cleaner to work as you put it in your machine just like a normal cd, it spins round and the bristles clean the cdp lens. As your player doesn't work and won't spin cds the cleaner will not work.
If it is a lens problem, which I doubt, you can clean the lens VERY carefully with a cotton wool pad SLIGHTLY wetted with distilled purewater, or failing that tapehead cleaning fluid or as a last resort neat Vodka [which is virtually neat alcohol].

Oh I bought the CD Cleaner and thanks to the patience of my husband (I have none) it has worked. It took a while for the CD thingys to clean properly and the first thing I knew it was working was Dusty Springfield booming out from the saystem (I was in the garden) the dog running around to see where it came from, and hubby looking like a cat who'd just hd cream. May thanks folks for all your help. I really do appreciate this

Excellent, you were lucky that the CD spun up - mine didn't in the end.

I would suggest doing the task at least every month now.
