I am attempting to transfer some records to CD. The computer is a P4 2.2 and a Sound Blaster Value. I have done several and they all have sections that appear to have skipped, but just mildly. I listen through the computer speakers and the selection sounds good (with out skips). I have recorded using both Roxio Sound Editor and Audition 1.5 and the results are the same on either one. I decided to purchase a Sound Blaster X-fi but hasn't arrived yet(on line purchase). After finding this great site and reading the post I am wondering if this may not be the problem! Everything seems good except for this one problem, sound, volume, etc. Also I am using a Radio Shack turntable with an internal pre-amp.

Hi

What should be happenning is that whatever you are listening to via the PC speakers during the recording stage should be just that.

Can you describe which bits are missing - start - end - both.

I've had this problem in the past and it's usually down to software, not hardware.

I would suggest closing as many running applications as possible especially Internet connections and e-mail clients.

The reason you get skips is because the program priority is overtaken by another running application. For example, if you get a skip or a jump at fairly regular intervals it could be your e-mail client accessing the network looking for mail.

I would also try a dedicated recording application such as Spin It Again or All Sound Recorder XP.

Sorry it has taken so long to reply! MJB has solved my problem. I locked out the internet and turned off as many processes as I dared and... no missing bits. These random bits were usually scattered throughout the song. But the new sound card did greatly improve my sound quality on the computer though.
