jeez guys I feel like a total newbie here.

All was well till I moved girlfriends PC. Now I can't get any noise out of it. S/c is an Aureal Vortex, system XPpro no updates.
Was getting basic windows noises out of it and it did play a bit of an mp3 using WMP but now I'm getting nothing. Help

All I can think of is, is it seated properly, are the connections still on it.

Do you have any software that shows a volume level so that you can tell if sound is going in as opposed to sound coming out = speaker connection duff ?

ps: welcome Mr Newbie, please don't hesitate to call back biggrin

Cant see it being anything drastic if all you've done is move a pc, thinking logical on that premis, a dislodged card is possible but more likely is a wire/speaker issue of sorts.

..unless you've been a tinkering dodgy

DEvice Manager is saying all is well but summats amiss innit. Re-booted and got the windows theme tune at splash scree then rean an mp3 which played for 3secs then cut out. Oh! and cds wont play at all.

But I'll try re-seating etc taa

Looks like your on a roll more VIP advice.

I still hedge on it being something silly if its just the movement of a puter.

Run dxdiag to check the functionality of the soundcard, start>run> type dxdiag hit return, self explanitory from there (famous last words.

or try deleting the soundcard from within the device manager and rebooting to let the OS pick it back up, the drivers will already be on your hdd.

Has the flimsy sound wire, during transit, popped off the soundcard or off the back of the rom your using to play the cd's?

Have you tried the trouble shooter button in the "sounds & audio devices" properties?
control panel>sounds & audio devices>hardware>properties>troubleshoot button.

Too much thought for me this early, to the coffee maker Robin nananananananan

When you moved the PC did you take the speakers as well ?

Maybe if you turn up the sound you will hear them playing in the other room !

Mmmmm.... s'obviously NOT going to be a "you've just forgotten to check that button" kind of thing. More a un-install, drivers and card out total re-vamp kind of thing. So back in a week or two ;-)

If you get the sound at startup then it 'sounds' like the card is OK at that stage.

Via Msconfig can you perform selective startups and see what piece of software is disabling the card ?

As to dxdiag JW it'll show you a list of tabs, one should be titled Sound, or "Sound 1" "Sound 2" if you have more than one soundcard...ie: onboard audio as well as your slot in card. Theres a test button under the respective tab and it'll play sound via the card and ask you if you heard it, yes or no button to hit, cant recall what happens if you hit no tho.

Still thinking on it being summat daft if all you've done is move a pc from "A" to "B". I dunno if you have, like myself, a subwoofer box and by default more than the average wires. Thinking back to anytime I've lost sound thats been the culprit, a simple audio jack not seated properly, or my usual ...the audio lead jack stuck in the wrong hole at the back of the Soundcard lol

Pop in an audio and set it playing with the volume turned up, then nip round the back and play about with the wiring whilst its playing...on the chance that'll burst into life.

Having a red hot cuppa in your hand at this point is not advised cry

But surely if you get the initial M$ startup sound then it must be working - to a point - which rules out connection & seating ?

has to be software related ?

You don't have Onboard Sound activated in your BIOS do you? It could be overriding the sound card after boot-up. hmm

It can't but there was a thread recently about running 2 sound cards and the posibility of using both PCI and OnBoard at the same time. As we know that jW likes to tinker, he might have had a go to see if it would work. Have you done more than just move the PC Mr Walker?????
