Girlfriends PC is kaput. Bizarre accident - found tiny wire wrapped around and jamming CPU fan. Chip had overheated and shut down PC. Rebooted & PC was flaky wouldn't open windows. Messed about with it and made it worse eventually had to reset cmos as nothing would work. Now PC beeps once [for all ok] but only gets to 1st post screen which reports the cpu AMD 1700xp but will go no further.
Suspect CPU is fried and my messing about has only made things worse. Could u guys pls help. Am I correct ie CPU bust or what. Can swap CPU from other PC [ie my office PC] but will only do that if you can confirm or tell me how to confirm that CPU is fried.

Sounds like the chip has had it, luckily the 1700's are cheap these days (good time for an upgrade), but you might have scrambled your windows instalation with mutiple re-booting.

Tnx Mysty.
Knew you'd give some sensible advice [should make u a mod m8]. May well have scrambled Windoze. Got the PC running yesterday then went and bu**ered it up again. Have a feeling the CPU is ok when cool but is going wonky when hot.
Gues I'm gonna have to swap in a known working chip then follow a process of elimination
Some more USEFUL help would b welcome or a pointer to a HELPFUL site.
