I was thinking about getting some more memory for my puter, but am not sure what i have to get.
After poking about in my computer for the first time ever to fit my DSL modem into it's PCI slot, i had a gander at the memory slots (i think).
I've got a samsung 256mb 133MHz SDRAM jobber in there at the mo', and there seems to be another free slot next to it with nothing in.
Does this mean i can only put another 256mb in there? Is 512mb the maximum for me? I thought most went up to 1024mb?
Anyway do i just get another 256mb 133Mhz SDRAM bit and put it in there?
What about DDR ram, can i use this and what's the difference? My processor is a P4 1.8Ghz....
Also are there any good brands to get in particular, anyone recommend any?
Cheers

O.k. after fiddling about a bit it looks like i have the following motherboard.
Board: MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD MS-6534
Bus Clock: 100 megahertz

Looks like a no-go for DDR, but seems like i should be able to put 2x512mb as max (i thought the memory size was to do with the length of the slot?)
Mmm
Anyway what about branded vs. unbranded. I was looking at dropping another 256 or 512 of ebuyers own branded ram. Is this ghetto ram?
Cheers

Lo Deft

You will probably be fine with generic unbranded ram. Ive never paid extra for branded before, and it has all worked ok

I did however have problems with 512 Mb banks...just about every mother board ive had hasnt liked 512Mb modules...even tho it says it can take them no problem.

So i had to go down to 256 modules.....just something to be aware of....it might just be me being unlucky

I agree with Aj.

If you are buying memory which is not specifically designed for that board, you may have difficulties with a 512 chip. I would just get another 256 smile

I have seen the odd instance where two different brands of RAM did not get on together. Although this is pretty rare, it`s worth bearing in mind.
I would compare the price of generic RAM and Samsung RAM, and if there`s not much difference in price get the Samsung so at least they match.
Whatever you get,I`d make sure you match the bus speed cos a mismatch here can cause problems.
Hope this helps
